5 Signs that it’s Time for Brake Repair or Replacement

A red car is sitting on a lift in a garage.

It’s hard to overstate how important healthy brakes are to your safety. Because faulty brakes can put you at serious risk of an accident, it’s important to get to the shop at the first sign of brake trouble. At Auto Trans M.D., we provide expert brake repair in the greater Palm Beach, FL area. Here’s a look at five warning signs of a brake problem.

Squealing or Grinding Noises

One of the most common signs of brake trouble is unusual noises when you apply the brakes. A high-pitched squeal often indicates worn-out brake pads, while a grinding sound may indicate that the brake pads have worn down completely, leading to metal-on-metal contact. Brake pads often need to be replaced somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 miles, but in some cases replacement is needed sooner.

Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

A brake pedal that feels soft or spongy is another red flag. This sensation often indicates air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak. These issues can compromise the brake fluid's effectiveness in transferring force from the pedal to the brakes. If your car is leaking brake fluid, you’ve got a major safety hazard and shouldn’t drive it until the leak has been addressed.

Vibrations While Braking

If you notice vibrations or pulsations, it could be a sign of warped brake rotors. Warping can occur due to excessive heat buildup during braking, causing uneven surfaces on the rotors. In many cases, rotors need to be replaced somewhere between 40,000 and 70,000 miles, with variation depending on driving habits.

Dashboard Warning Light

An illuminated ABS (anti-lock braking system) warning light should be brought to the mechanic’s attention ASAP. This light may come on due to issues such as low brake fluid or faulty wheel speed sensors.

Pulling to One Side

If your car pulls to one side when you brake, it could indicate issues with the brake calipers.

If a caliper seizes up due to corrosion, it can cause your car to veer, putting you at serious risk of a collision. With this issue, it’s best to get towed to the shop instead of driving there.
